About Mankato Arena
The Mankato Civic Center, now called The Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center, is an impressive indoor multi-purpose arena in Mankato, Minnesota. It has seating capacity for 5,280 fans for sports events but can be expanded to 8,200 seats for concert events. The venue was built in 1994 and opened to the public in early 1995.
Currently, it is home to the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks men’s ice hockey and women’s ice hockey teams. But it also serves as host for a variety of musical performances, conventions, and other events every year. Other notable past artists and events include Aerosmith, Disney Live, Elton John, James Taylor, Jeff Dunham, John Mellencamp, Kenny Rogers, KISS, Monster Jam, Tom Petty, Weird Al Yankovic and WWE Live
HISTORY
The plan to build the Civic Center came in 1992 during a general election when voters approved a .5% tax increment to support downtown renovations that included building a new sports arena. Construction began two years later in 1994 and was completed in 1995 with the opening event being a hockey match on February 3.
Ice Hockey Team Summary
The Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks are hockey teams playing at the NCAA Division I level. They represent Minnesota State University, Mankato and compete as members of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Their home arena is the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center located in downtown Mankato, Minnesota.
HISTORY
The university’s hockey team commenced play as a varsity sport in 1969-70. They were independent of a conference affiliation at the NCAA Division II level from 1969-70 through the 1983-84 seasons. But then, in the following 1984-85 season, the team moved to play at the NCAA Division III level before returning to Division II play from 1992-93 through 1995-96. But then, the team shifted to Division I play starting in the 1996-97 season. Later, the team became members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in the 1999-00 season and remained until 2021.
